Urgent: Authenticated Subscriber Arbitrary File Deletion in wpForo (CVE-2026-3666) — What WordPress Site Owners Must Do Now

On 7 April 2026 a high-severity vulnerability affecting the wpForo Forum plugin was published (CVE-2026-3666). Versions up to and including 2.4.16 are affected. The flaw allows an authenticated user with a Subscriber-level account to trigger arbitrary file deletion via crafted POST requests. The vulnerability is classified as Broken Access Control and carries a CVSS score of 8.8 — meaning it has high impact and is likely to be abused in automated campaigns.

  • Arbitrary file deletion allows attackers to remove files that are required for WordPress or plugin operation. Deleting core PHP files, configuration files, plugin/theme files, or backup archives can break the site, remove forensic evidence, or enable follow-up attacks.
  • The attacker requires only a Subscriber account — a role that exists by default and is commonly used for registration-based communities. Many sites allow subscriber-level signups with minimal friction.
  • Because the vulnerability can be automated, attackers can build scripts to repeatedly create accounts and target large numbers of sites, leading to mass compromise campaigns.
  • Even if the attacker cannot immediately delete core files, targeted deletion of upload directories, theme templates, or plugin assets can cause destructive consequences and data loss.

High-level technical explanation (no exploit code)

This issue is a Broken Access Control flaw in wpForo’s handling of a particular POST-based endpoint. A Subscriber-authenticated request can supply a crafted payload in the POST body which instructs the plugin code to remove files on disk. Because the plugin does not correctly validate the user’s privileges for this operation or fails to properly sanitize input identifying the file path, a low-privilege user can escalate to destructive file deletion.

This is not an SQL injection or remote code execution vulnerability — it is an authorization/validation bypass that permits destructive filesystem operations.

Immediate actions (first 60–120 minutes)

  1. Backup everything (database + files)
    • Create a complete offline backup and store it off-server (S3, remote storage, or local copy). If the site becomes unstable, you’ll need a reliable restore point.
    • Commands (example):
      • Export DB: mysqldump -u DB_USER -p DB_NAME > /tmp/site-db-$(date +%F).sql
      • Archive files: tar -czf /tmp/site-files-$(date +%F).tar.gz /var/www/html
  2. Update wpForo to 2.4.17 or later (recommended)
    • Update in a maintenance window if needed, but if you have no staging environment and the site is under active threat, apply the update immediately.
    • After updating, clear caches and verify that forums load correctly.
  3. If you cannot update immediately: enable emergency mitigations
    • Deploy WAF rules to block known exploit vectors (see WAF recommendations below).
    • Temporarily restrict or disable public registration (if your site allows self-signup).
    • Restrict the Subscriber role: remove any custom capabilities that allow file operations (some plugins mistakenly grant extended capabilities to Subscriber).
    • Temporarily set forum functionality to read-only or disable features that accept arbitrary POST payloads.
  4. Change any hosting panel or FTP/SFTP credentials if you suspect they may be weak and ensure 2FA for all admin accounts.
  5. Put the site into maintenance mode if you suspect active exploitation to prevent further damage.

Detection: signs of attempted or successful exploitation

Look for the following in your logs, filesystem, and database:

  • Unusual POST requests to wpForo endpoints (check web server access logs for POSTs hitting plugin paths).
    • Ejemplo: grep "POST" /var/log/nginx/access.log | grep "wpforo" (adjust for your log format)
  • POST requests with unusually large or binary payloads or payloads that include relative paths (../) or full filesystem paths.
  • Unexpected 200 or 500 responses to POST requests from low-privilege user accounts.
  • Missing or suddenly changed files in:
    • wp-content/uploads/
    • wp-content/themes/<your-theme>/
    • wp-content/plugins/wpforo/
    • wp-config.php or index.php (if present in logs)
  • Tampered plugin files or unexpected changes to plugin modification timestamps.

If you find evidence of arbitrary deletions, do not immediately delete logs or artifacts — preserve them for investigation.


Full incident response checklist (if you detect exploitation)
